In a future dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to a particular human virtue; Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). Upon reaching the age of sixteen, young people must choose to remain with the faction they were born into or choose a new faction. For Beatrice Prior the decision is complicated because she is divergent, an anomaly who does not neatly fit into any one faction. Unfortunately for Beatrice, being divergent is dangerous. Roth has written an  engaging, thought provoking, and fast paced young adult novel that has major crossover appeal for adults. This is the first novel in the Divergent trilogy. Precious M.

Maud believes that her new life with refined ladies, plenty of food to eat, and, most importantly, the love of Hyacinth is just what she needs and wants. Maud, who adores Hyacinth, must pay a price for her new life. She must live in lonely secrecy and only come out at night so that the neighbors don’t know she exists. The Hawthorne sisters are mediums who scam heartbroken people who have lost loved ones.  Hyacinth needs Maud to play the spirits of the deceased, including Caroline Lambert whose mother longs to contact her through spiritualism. Maud learns what true love is when the Hawthorne sisters leave her to die in a fire during a séance that’s gone wrong. Newbery Medal Winner Laura Schlitz has written a fast-paced, young adult tale of resilience and love with a heroine who has more lovability and courage than she realizes. Debbie D.

An unsettling thriller beginning with successful boy (Nick) meets beautiful girl (Amy) and begin what should be the perfect life in NY.  Both work in journalism but lose their jobs with the downturn in the economy.  An illness in Nick's family takes them back to his childhood home in Carthage, Mo. All the changes takes its toll and on the morning of their 5th anniversary Nick comes home to find Amy missing  under suspicious circumstances. The story is told from alternate points of view and Amy and Nick reveal new secrets and facts along the way. Things are not what they first appear to be. I had to stop myself from turning to the last page to read the outcome.  Barbara P.

Along the way, Bilbo happens to discover a ring that, unbeknownst to him, holds the key to the future of Middle Earth. This classic of fantasy literature is perfect for reading and re-reading and should appeal to teens and adults who enjoy fantasy literature.  Precious M.
