Staff is here to help you answer questions, assist you in using the BCCLS online catalog and databases along with other library services. WEST CALDWELL PUBLIC LIBRARY ADULT PROGRAMS Below you will find information about the programs offered by the Reference & Adult Services Department. To get updates on movies, computer class schedules, book discussions and other adult programs please check this page regularly. Scroll down to view current and planned programming. Computer Classes The West Caldwell Public Library offers weekly computer classes Friday mornings from 9:30-10:30AM in the Community Meeting Room from September - May. The classes are designed for beginning computer users and those that would like to refresh their skills. Introductory topics include mouse and typing skills, searching the internet, introduction to email and introduction to Microsoft Word. Courses for more advanced computer users include databases instruction sessions and genealogy and family research using Ancestry Library Edition and Heritage Quest. Class size is limited to FOUR students and advanced registration is REQUIRED. The monthly class schedule comes out on the 15th of each month. A Friendly Book Discussion The West Caldwell Public Library offers a monthly morning book discussion from 10:30AM - 11:30AM, featuring a variety of classic and contemporary fiction and nonfiction titles. Meeting are held in the Crane's Mill Retirement Community Library at 459 Passaic Avenue, West Caldwell. The discussion is open to the public. Copies of the book are available at the Reference Desk. Please contact the Reference Department to pick-up a copy. Saturday Matinee Book Club Beginning in March 2009, the West Caldwell Public Library will offer a monthly Saturday afternoon book club from 2:00PM - 3:00PM in the WCPL Community Meeting Room. The group will meet the first Saturday of the month. All book discussions are open to the public. Copies of the books are available at the Reference Desk. Please contact the Reference Department for additional information. Friday Afternoon Movie Every Friday the Library shows a free feature length movie in the Community Meeting Room. English-As-A-Second Language The West Caldwell Public Library offers weekly English-As-A-Second Language Program from September - May. Classes are held from 6:30-8:30PM in the Community Meeting Room. Classes are free and open to the public. To inquire or to register, please contact the Reference Department at 973-226-5441. Additional Events The Library presents special evening and weekend programming featuring entertaining musical and theatre performances and informative lectures and discussions. Adult Summer Reading Club The Library offers a fun and exciting Adult Summer Reading Program from June - August featuring entertaining afternoon and evening programming, prize raffles, movies and more! The West Caldwell Public Library offers delivery services to homebound patrons who are unable to visit the library and select materials for personal use. Librarians can select materials of interest to you and have them delivered to your home. For more information, please contact the Reference Department at 973-226-5441. The West Caldwell Public Library provides Internet and wireless access during regular library operating hours. Staff members are available to assist with public computer use; however, patrons are expected to use the Internet access computes without library staff assistance. The library also offers two Microsoft Office workstations. Patrons can utilize Microsoft Office 2007 at these stations. All computer access is on a first come, first serve basis.
The West Caldwell Public Library card holders can now borrow a family pass to the American Museum of Natural History! Features of the pass include: free admission for two adults and up to four children, admission to a special exhibitions, previews and member-only events, discounts on Space Show, IMAX tickets, museum shop and restaurant purchases as well as parking. For more information, please contact the Reference Department at 973-226-5441. A refundable deposit of $40 is required when the pass is borrowed. Faxing services are limited to six pages per visit. The Library can only send faxes for patrons; we do not receive incoming faxing for patrons. At this time, we do not offer international faxing services. Currently the fees for faxing services are as follows: Within New Jersey: $2.00 for 1-3 pages, $4.00 for 4-6 pages Outside of New Jersey: $3.00 for 1-3 pages, $6.00 for 4-6 pages 800 numbers: Flat rate of $2.00 for 1-6 pages
Are there fees for printing from library computers? Black and white printing costs 20¢ and color printing costs 50¢.
Do you have an newspapers on Microfilm? We currently have The Progress on microfilm dating from 1882-2007. For access please contact the Reference Department. Printing is only available in black and white.
Do I need a library card to access the Internet at the Library? No, you do not have to have a West Caldwell Library card to use the computers. If you don't have a West Caldwell Public Library card or a library card from another BCCLS library, a Reference Librarian can issue a guest pass.
Does the Library purchase books in foreign languages? Currently the Library only owns titles in English. If you need a title published in a foreign language contact the Reference Department and a Reference Librarian will assist you.
Can I check out Reference books? No. Reference books are not available for checkout. If you need to use a Reference book, you are welcome to use the item at the library or photocopy the pages you need using one of the Library's photocopiers.
Does the Library have tax forms? Yes! The Library has reproducible tax forms which can be photocopied. If there is a tax form you cannot locate, a Reference Librarian will assist you.
I don't live in West Caldwell. Can I get a library card? Yes! If you work in West Caldwell you are eligible for a free courtesy card. If you do not work in town you may purchase a membership. Contact the library at 973-226-5441 for more information.
Is there a pay phone in the Library? No. The Library does not have a pay phone.
Do you carry James Caldwell High School Yearbooks? Yes! Our collection of James Caldwell High School Yearbooks are kept in the Local History & Genealogy Room. They cannot be checked out.
I have a reference question for a librarian. How do I ask online? The Library offers a virtual reference service during our regular operating hours. You can access it from the Library's homepage. Simply scroll down the page to the Meebo dialog box and type your question. If you need assistance outside of our operating hours, you can email the Reference Department at WCALRef@bccls.org. We will respond to your question the next business day.
Can I use the Library's databases from home? Yes! Almost all the databases are available remotely 24 hours a day. Ancestry Library Edition may only be utilized while in the Local History & Genealogy Room during the Library's regular operating hours.
Is there a quiet room available where I can study or meet with a small group. Yes! The Library has a small quiet study room available for our patrons. The room has a maximum capacity of 6 individual and is available on a first come, first serve basis. The room may be booked in one hour increments. You may reserve the room the day you plan on using it. We cannot reserve the room in advance.
